The film is often linked with a 2017 U.S. Film called “Hidden Figures” that tells the story of a team that was behind a historic mission which included many women. The story opens with Vidya Balan, who plays the fictional character, named Tara Shinde, who is the project director of the Mars Orbiter Mission.
She is hurriedly making breakfast for her family while also getting ready to leave for work and to arrive at mission control at ISRO. It is the launch day and Shinde hoping that warning is due to the hot weather, gives the go-ahead for launch.
The rocket explodes before even leaving Earth’s atmosphere. Shinde admits her mistake tearfully to her boss, Rakesh Dhawan.
Rakesh Dhawan, played by Akshay Kumar, lead a team of mostly women who are trying to put a satellite in orbit around Mars in “Mission Mangal.” After the failure of this launch, Dhawan is put in charge of ISRO’s Mars mission.
Shinde while teaching her daughter how to fry puri after the gas is shut down because the oil is still hot, comes up with an idea. She rushes to ISRO and tells her idea to Dhawan, which would enable them to get to Mars with a smaller rocket and a smaller amount of fuel.
An ISRO official, Rupert Desai, dismisses the idea claiming it to be ridiculous, but Shinde and Dhawan convince the agency officials to let them try. Desai continues to doubt the project, throughout the mission. But, in the end, he has to take his words back when MOM becomes a historic success.
